Project: W1511
This classical style Victorian country house was very much missing a kitchen and family hub that would meet modern family living. The existing kitchen was very small and had become screen by a former service wing. It was our aim to create an open plan kitchen area for informal dining and family living that was bright and engaged with an underused section of the garden. The relationship between inside and outside was important as the kitchen had been screen from much of it with the previous service wing.
The winner of 2019 BALI National Landscape Awards Domestic Garden Construction
The new extension was designed in a modern classical style presenting the look of an orangery, but clearly of its time. The level thresholds to the external doors, upper terrace and wide steps allow free flowing movement between house and garden. The terrace becoming an extension of the kitchen in the summer months.
The new courtyard garden area won the BALI 2019 Domestic Garden Construction Award. The old service wing was demolished and re-imagined by rotating it through 90 degrees so that a full courtyard was formed. The new wing also allowed space for an everyday entrance leading into a new boot room that afford views into the courtyard garden. The back of house rooms and the houses heating and electrical systems were replaced and upgraded as per of the houses refurbishment.
