Project: W1266
This new Arts and Crafts inspired house is a replacement dwelling located in a street of various age and styled houses on the outskirts of Winchester. When Witcher Crawford was first approached, our client wished to refurbish and extend a pre-war house on the site. Our initial feasibility exercise indicated that by taking advantage of the value added tax rules for new build projects – which are zero rated against twenty percent tax for extensions and refurbishment – it made economic sense to replace the existing house with a new design.
The bright, welcome exterior, leading into the warm oak interior is very pleasing when arriving home from work or coming in after an afternoon in the garden.
Our client was fond of certain Arts and Crafts details from the original building and was keen to explore replacing the house with a new Arts and Crafts design. Witcher Crawford has an affinity to the Arts and Crafts style as the practice share many of the principles synonymous with the movement. Particular attention to detail and considered material selection are an important part of the company’s design philosophy.
The house has many traditional features, including an oak staircase, generous hallway with parquet flooring, oak panelling and large solid fuel fireplaces, giving the rooms a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. As the house is new, these traditional details are combined with the advantage of modern construction and high levels of insulation.
