Project: Single-storey extension and refurbishment
Year: 2025
Witcher Crawford were commissioned to design a new single-storey extension, and refurbishment of an existing property in Hampshire. Designed around the core philosophy of accessible and inclusive living, the scheme provides a manoeuvrable, open-plan living space for wheelchair access, and integrates bespoke care facilities, to create an accessible and comfortable home for a disabled client and their family.
An adaptation focussed around accessible and inclusive living, demonstrating Witcher Crawford’s expertise in delivering bespoke design solutions for clients and users with disabilities.
A new hydrotherapy facility accommodates physical therapy treatment, and includes a purpose-built X-Y hoist system and changing facilities, reflecting Witcher Crawford’s ability to deliver bespoke, specialist care facilities for clients with reduced mobility.
The interior living space has been freed-up to integrate the kitchen, living, and dining areas, taking advantage of the enhanced light quality of the extended rear portion of the house and views into the private garden. This is made possible through new large-format glazing and pyramid rooflight. The form of the plan also deliberately offers ample space for circulation and wheelchair accessibility, which simultaneously upgrades the existing property to a suit the standard of contemporary living.
The extension is designed around both functionality and elegance, adding a contemporary twist to the rear of the property; the use of red cedar louvres and deep soffits offer both shading and visual interest, and black aluminium fascias create a bold, sleek contrast.
Sensory and play installations have been integrated into the landscape strategy, designed for inclusive participation, attributing to an overall design philosophy centred around accessible living which has been carried through the scheme.
