Arts and Crafts House, Kent

Project: W1554

The Arts & Crafts house in rural Kent is a replacement 5-bedroom dwelling designed to a contemporary interpretation of the Arts & Crafts style. Witcher Crawford were commissioned to design a property which suited contemporary living whilst offering a high attention to detail that celebrated the beauty and intricacy of the Arts & Crafts.

Situated in a conservation area, Witcher Crawford found it fundamental to propose a new-build property which had a positive contribution to this sensitive site. A replacement dwelling which adopts an Arts & Crafts style creates a cohesive character, and celebrates the traditional style and materials of the conservation area.

The property is designed to provide an open, free flowing plan to the kitchen and dining spaces, offering a comfortable and efficient plan arrangement for the needs of a modern family. The rear of the property also offers a generous quantity of glazing, providing ample natural lighting to the living and bedroom spaces, whilst simultaneously taking advantage of the views into the private garden.

The house adopts oak frame detailing, with herringbone brick accents to the window bays and creasing tiles above openings to the rendered facade. The rear balcony is detailed with a bespoke steel balustrade and integrated Brise Soleil to provide shading to the ground floor.

This attention to detail has been carried through to the building’s interior, with bespoke joinery designed throughout, as well as a bespoke timber staircase design. The comprehensive detailing carried through every aspect of the scheme expresses the testament for high-quality craftmanship.

The pool house wing adopts a contemporary design which gives the space a clean, hygienic aesthetic suited for a pool room. An art wall which was designed in-house provides a feature element to the space whilst large format glazing provides uninterrupted and expansive views into the garden to bring the outside in. The combination of this glazing and 3 large rooflights flood the space with natural lighting.

The pool received the Silver Award in the ‘Residential Indoor Freeboard Pools £150,000 and over’ category at the British Pool and Hot Tub Awards 2024.
